Beautiful baking: Top bakeries and patisseries in Calgary

We don’t all have the time or kitchen savvy to bake our own bread. Luckily, there are several bakers in Calgary that have plenty of both. The following shops offer superb selections of bread as well as sweet and savoury pastries of all kinds.

Patisserie du Soleil Bakery Cafe

1
309-2525 Woodview Dr SW, Calgary, AB T2W 4N4

Visit this Parisian-style café in Glenmore Landing (or its sister shop in The Bow building) for its fine baked goods as well as sit-down meal service. A Paris-trained chef, owner Ala Nahal’s pastry skills are très bon. The patisserie’s baked goods selection includes cookies, cakes, fruit tarts, éclairs and beautiful baguettes.

Sidewalk Citizen Bakery

618 Confluence Way SE, Calgary, AB T2G 0G1

Known for his supreme sourdough skills, Sidewalk Citizen’s Aviv Fried and wife Michal Lavi operate one of the city’s hottest and hippest bakeries. The two Sidewalk Citizen Bakery counters are located in the Manchester district off Macleod Trail Southeast and inside Sunnyside Natural Market. Additional baked goods include scones, sticky buns and pain au chocolat. Ask about bread-making classes.

Yann Haute Patisserie

329, 23 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2S 0J3

Not only are Yann Haute Patisserie macarons prepared by a Parisian expat chef, these delicate French cookies are gluten free. Romp your French-pastry-lovin’ way through a giant list of flavours from mint-chocolate and lavender-apricot to salted caramel and strawberry-vanilla.

The quintessential Mexican meal, tacos are also a relatively scarce commodity in Calgary. However, we’ve done some digging and unearthed the select few restaurants that make truly marvelous versions of these hand-held snacks.
The city’s summer season features a delicious dance card of culinary festivals and events. Many, such as Stampede-time pancake breakfasts, are easy to access the day of, but the various tasting and tippling shindigs listed here can fill up quickly, so purchasing tickets sooner than later for these foodie festivities is recommended. The city’s pathway system is one of the longest in North America. Given its lengthy stretches, the occasional rest and snack stop, though few and far between, are a welcome sight when walking, biking and inline skating. Here are a few restaurants, cafés and snack shacks located on or near our scenic cycling system. Image credit: iStock.com/mihailomilovanovic.
