Always worth a visit

The menu is always interesting and the food up with the best in town - which these days is a pretty high bar to clear. The service can be a little iffy sometimes but always pleasant. Best meal ever may be pushing it for the five star rating - but in comparison to other 4 star rated restaurants this is far superior.

Overall great experience. Fantastic menu, great service and a good selection of wine. Did not let me down. I will be back. I recommended it to my mother who is pretty picky and she enjoyed it thoroughly. If you can win her over you have a good thing going. :)

Here we are in the major leagues. Imaginative and artistic cuisine. Professionnally trained staff : pampering from the start to the end. And no stiff attitude. Velvetty ambiance. Appropriate music. Enough room between table, so that, at some tables, the meal can be intimate, even with a full house. Difficult to hear the conversation at the other table. There was a 3 year old in the room, but I did not hear him. A real wine list, although not the most extensive. Professionnally built, touches the major types of wines, with quality. Since I was dining in solo, I kept my eyes quietly, sensibly, on the selection availlable by the glass. The riesling from Niagara was good. As a starter, I had the Smoked Yukon Gold Potato Chowder with Seared Arctic Char. A revelation. I knew about the clam showder of Magdalens Islands, but this is a completely different dish. Made of a base of cream of potato, white wine, broth, onion, cream, 2 large peaces of char, 5 mussels, 2 large scallops and a lobster’s pincer. It makes a full meal in itself. One has to be really hungry to have a complete main dish after that. Seriously, if the customer is not exceptionnally hungry, the chowder and dessert do the whole job. I had ordered gnocchi primavera, though. It’s good, but I was already full from the chowder. I understand now the comment of another reviewer : yes, I also got about 10 gnocchi, but the dish is more than that. It associates vegetables and mushrooms, that are an integral part of the dish, not only siders nor the sauce. This was not more expensive than some other restaurants I tried in the last weeks. Even if I compare with the ones that were cheaper, here I got a real increment of quality, for only a small increment of money paid. Excellent value for price (50$ with 5 oz of wine). I also salute their promotion of local and Canadian products.

Best value in Halifax

Wow ! From the app through to the dessert, everything exceeded my expectations and then some. Explosion of flavour, good size portions. They are true to their philosophy of 'comfort food' done in a extraordinary way.

Fine French dining often includes rich, creamy broth as a staple of the menu. You will find one of the best French onion soups in the city at Chives, which includes a caramelized four-onion recipe, along with a baguette and Gruyere. A gluten-free version is also available upon request. Their dining room mixes classic wood and trendy patterned chairs with painted, exposed ducts and a bank vault door.

Where to enjoy NS wines when you dine in Halifax

Where to enjoy NS wines when you dine in Halifax

Chives Canadian Bistro’s relaxed and playful vibe makes its stellar food even more fun. The wine menu changes seasonally, but count on Nova Scotia wines being well represented. That’s easy with white and sparkling wines, but – impressively – Chives makes room for plenty of Nova Scotia reds as well, notably L’Acadie Vineyards’ intense and powerful Passito. Try it with the delicious lamb pot roast.
