On maternity leave after the birth of her baby, Kristelle Mercier had plenty of time to think. As her return to work drew near, one thing was clear: her old position in restaurant management had lost its allure. She began exploring the possibilities of starting her own business and launching a socially responsible venture that would be aligned with her true values and interests.
While Kristelle was thinking of starting a business, it just so happened that her long-time friend Geneviève Paquette, a fashion designer with an unorthodox approach and clothing available in shops throughout Quebec, was thinking of opening her very own boutique. So the two teamed up, combining Geneviève's knowledge of fashion with Kristelle's business acumen, and turned their vision into reality. In October of 2011 Les Coureurs de Jupons opened its doors on the fast-growing Masson Street to champion local Quebec designers and make their one-of-a-kind creations available to anyone.
“The Masson neighbourhood was booming and we felt it was ready to welcome a different type of clothing store,” Geneviève says of their choice of location. “We set up shop here because we wanted to make a difference to the area.” Given the warm welcome that their store received from the neighbourhood, it seems that the duo's doing just that.
