Meet the owner

It’s hard to believe you can pick up handmade soap, fresh local coffee beans, a cake platter and imported olive oil from the same place, but that’s just a small sampling of the diverse range of products The Mercantile has to offer. The neighbourhood boutique is practically brimming with items you wouldn’t normally see on a trip to the grocery store, and that’s what makes it stand out.

“It has your everyday essentials, plus really fun food gift ideas, and you’ll always find something you don’t see anywhere else,” says owner Shannon Doyle.

A desire to sell unique, quality goods means Shannon has stocked the store with all kinds of products, from candy, to salts, small housewares, snacks and teas. “Somehow it all works together,” she says.

You can barely turn around without seeing something fun and interesting, and if you’re on the hunt for gifts for the eclectic person on your list, you’ll almost certainly find something at The Mercantile.

“It’s not a typical store,” says Shannon.

When it comes to The Mercantile, owner Shannon Doyle puts a lot of effort into selecting unique food items that her shoppers are unlikely to find anywhere else in Toronto, from homewares to hot sauce. While the selection varies, Mado’s remains a hot seller (get it?), along with Boyo’s and No. 7 hot sauce. While you never know what you’ll find at The Mercantile, you’re bound to discover something unique and local.
