Decided to get dinner in Chinatown before a Jays game and settled on House Of Gourmet after reading some great reviews, I was not dissapointed! My 75 year old father and i were quickly seated and given 2 huge menus to navigate! I was thinking of ordering the peeking duck after seeing it hanging in the window on the way in but my dad being less adventureous in his food selection decided not too. There were so many choices on these menus it was quite overwhelming at first especially for my father, but i eventually came up with house special seafood with noodles and veg, beef tenderloin sizzling plate with chef special sauce and pork egg foo yong (cause my dad loves it lol) now it took longer to decide on our choices and try to convey them to our nice but very little english speaking waitress then it did for the food to be prepared, it arrived at our table in less then 5 minutes! The noodles were very good with lots of seafood, the Sizzling plate of beef was by far both of our favorites the beef was so tender and the sauce was amazing wish i had the recipe for the sauce! The egg foo yong was ok but came with no sauce. The portions were large and we finished everything. The bill was $40 dollars with 2 beers and tip included!
I really loved the dishes here, I can't believe this place has gone unnoticed by me this entire time!
Excellent, cheap Chinese food. What isn't to love! Expect fast but no-frills service and you may have to share tables with others sometimes, but I think that's part of the atmosphere of a Chinatown restaurant.
This place is a poor fit in Cabbagetown. The owners don't know what they are doing in terms of whether the want to be a bar only, or a restaurant. They have no chef and do all the cooking themselves -a total miss on food service. Their drinks taste like watered down vodka and are overpriced. The music on Fridays and Saturdays no longer attracts anyone. The spelling and grammar on their website is juvenile. Now they want to reincarnate themselves as a Cuban Restaurant in the same location. Having not learned that the location is bad for their type of business, with no patio, few customers, and no plan, the owners continue to throw monopoly money to the wind.
A lot of flavors are served. We like them all, especially for curry and pepper. You can not miss them. The appetizers are also delicious...
This is the restaurant in downtown Chinatown of Toronto. All other noodle houses aren't worth going. Portions are generous, and the specials are good value.
I found this restaurant on this site and decided to go for it because I wanted to try a different type of chinese restaurant. By the time I got there I remembered this restaurant when I was a little girl. This restaurant has been around for years (not sure if it had the same name all these years) and I had never once stepped inside til this day. I went with my fiance and we ordered (below) and it was absolutely amazing! We were both impressed, more so him cause he has never experienced "good" chinese food, especially "good" fried rice. Then after I have been going there quite frequently as it is close to my work, plus they have a variety of different foods as well as the price. Very good for it's portion and taste.
A large variety of foods to choose from ranging from barbeque meats to seafood dishes where the prices are inexpensive and reasonable! This is the place where you get your moneys worth where you can choose from over 100 meal items! The serving sizes here are huge and the food quality is better than expected! House of Gourmet is the best restaurant in Chinatown to find tasty quality BBQ meats! I love it here! I’ve been going here for awhile now and every time I do, it gets more and more delicious! This place is good for BBQ Duck & Pork (very savoury) and its suckling pig which is VERY crunchy! (very good together with white rice) I also like to order my all time favourite Crab Meat and Fish Maw Soup (with some pepper on the side for a little kick) which is very mouth-watering and can warm you up on a cold day. The veggies here are also good and fresh since the restaurant is so close to the Chinese super market, they buy their vegetables fresh everyday. Just make sure you eat during the lunch hours because that’s when the BBQ meats are at their freshest! Otherwise if you eat here during dinner, the meat sometimes turns out to be stale.
I wonder if "gourmet" in chinese translates to "A quantitative edible excess" The prices range from affordable to reasonable and the portions range from reasonable to excessive so unless you can't stomach a large volume of speed-cooked "authentic as can be found in canada" chinese, there's really no down side. Make sure to bring friends! Maybe a menu interpreter... There are *TWO* oversized menus featuring literally hundreds of dishes and combination dinners. Unless you delegate tasks and assign each person to a menu section, it might take your party a while to settle on an order. I'm not joking, the menu is huge...and sometimes vague. The food is consistently well cooked, and considering the price, more than worth it! Check this place out!
house of gourmet is simpily the best restaurant in china town. i've been going there for years now and every time i take some one there they love it!! the bbq pork is to die for and is the main dish i look foward to. the staff is friendly and quick to serve, the place is always full no matter what time you go but i've never waited more than five minutes for a table. I recomend this restaurant every one....
The price is definately affordable. Service has improved a lot from when I first started going there. MUST TRY beef with rice noodles.
Went there at about 3 am and loved everything about it. I'm pretty skeptical about buying chinese for places im not familiar with but the friend I was with recommended it and I loved the food so much everything was amazing. Definitley going there again.
The freshest food, and plenty of it. Great bang for the buck. Service is sweet... and helpful for those needing help (ie non-Chinese) with the two very long menus. We now just describe what we're craving and they point us to something great all the time. We don't do anything deep fried... BBQ'd duck is wonderful...veggies and white tofu always fresh...congees are lovely... try the tofu stuffed with scallops and bean sauce or the fish and leeks. If you wander in alone, they'll seat you at big round communal tables if you're comfortable with it... It's a regular place for us now.
