Decided to get dinner in Chinatown before a Jays game and settled on House Of Gourmet after reading some great reviews, I was not dissapointed! My 75 year old father and i were quickly seated and given 2 huge menus to navigate! I was thinking of ordering the peeking duck after seeing it hanging in the window on the way in but my dad being less adventureous in his food selection decided not too. There were so many choices on these menus it was quite overwhelming at first especially for my father, but i eventually came up with house special seafood with noodles and veg, beef tenderloin sizzling plate with chef special sauce and pork egg foo yong (cause my dad loves it lol) now it took longer to decide on our choices and try to convey them to our nice but very little english speaking waitress then it did for the food to be prepared, it arrived at our table in less then 5 minutes! The noodles were very good with lots of seafood, the Sizzling plate of beef was by far both of our favorites the beef was so tender and the sauce was amazing wish i had the recipe for the sauce! The egg foo yong was ok but came with no sauce. The portions were large and we finished everything. The bill was $40 dollars with 2 beers and tip included!
I really loved the dishes here, I can't believe this place has gone unnoticed by me this entire time!
Excellent, cheap Chinese food. What isn't to love! Expect fast but no-frills service and you may have to share tables with others sometimes, but I think that's part of the atmosphere of a Chinatown restaurant.
This place is a poor fit in Cabbagetown. The owners don't know what they are doing in terms of whether the want to be a bar only, or a restaurant. They have no chef and do all the cooking themselves -a total miss on food service. Their drinks taste like watered down vodka and are overpriced. The music on Fridays and Saturdays no longer attracts anyone. The spelling and grammar on their website is juvenile. Now they want to reincarnate themselves as a Cuban Restaurant in the same location. Having not learned that the location is bad for their type of business, with no patio, few customers, and no plan, the owners continue to throw monopoly money to the wind.
A lot of flavors are served. We like them all, especially for curry and pepper. You can not miss them. The appetizers are also delicious...
