Horrible! I have had 3 disappointing visits in a row and I am NEVER going back! This place is getting by on it's laurels. There is no effort put into anything- even the salad bar is sub-par. We had to send back not one but 2 bottles of wine. They have not updated their menu in ... ever? Obviously no chefs working here, kids in the kitchen is my guess. Steaks brushed with oil instead of allowed to rest. The maple salmon is coated in mayonaise! Yuck! The poached pickerel didn't come with lemon and I had to wait 25 minutes to get one- by which time the food had gone long cold. Seafood thermadore was pasty (like the seafood chowder) and made with pollock flakes and some kind of frozen seafood mixture. I definately suggest giving your head a shake before visiting the Prospector in Thunder Bay. Good bread, but not worth it.
Undoubtably the worst visit to this restaurant based on past experience. The cost of an individual meal has increase signigantly while the value has decreased. Disappointment commenced with the salad bar featuring shredded lettuce and advancing to a poor cut of meat, which although was cooked to the consistency desired was far from being tender. Despite the hi-light of the meal being the fresh buns available throughout, It will be a long time before I consider visiting this establishment again.
I'm a bit perplexed as to why this restaurant is so popular. Friends wanted to go here and I wouldn't have ever chosen the Prospector due to past experience. Two members of our party ordered Prime Rib, which I understand The Prospector is noted for. I ordered shrimp and the other diner ordered salmon. The Prime rib was tough and dry. The side dishes were a disgrace. Dry tasteless rice which was supposed to have veggies (they ran out), mini carrots cooked and cooked and cooked. The salad bar was a joke...canned mushrooms, beets, fruit salad, mini corn, peppers, olives, etc. Fresh - the lettuce, I guess. Soup: Seafood Chowder...Thickened with some sort of starch...no way it had any cream or milk. (sub-par). The only thing that was decent was the bread - everyone seems to like their buns. Overall, it wasn't worth the money. Their salad bar is priced at about $17 to $18 if you don't order an entree...worth about 2.50. Their prices are far too high for the quality. Ten shrimp for $19...they were tiny little shrimp. I know it's a steakhouse, but too expensive for food that just doesn't cut it. Very disappointed, will never go back again even if friends suggest it.
Wasn't that impressed the first time around. Bought a New York steak. Second time, trusted my friends and ordered Prime Rib and salad bar. The buns are so ridiculously good that they make me salivate even just thinking about them, but are much better tasting when they are fresh out of the oven smothered in garlic butter, and dipped into the beef and barley soup. Carrots are always tender and, mixed with garlic butter, are to die for. I ALWAYS order the friend of the owner cut (the biggest) and eat so many buns and so much soup that I hardly touch the rib. I save it for lunch the next day. The buns aren't as incredible when they cool down but still make an unbelievable sandwich with the leftover prime rib. Ask the server for buns to take home - even if there is a charge. You definitely won't regret it . If you do, come and fight me. ;)
As always, a great experience. Hard to believe they could do that many meals at one time (30) and get everyone meat dish to specs for all. Great service. If you haven't been there, you're missing out.
