Horrible overpriced food. Dry chicken, a rib sauce that is mostly ketchup. Home made baked goods - I doubt it. In my opinion, stay in your car and keep driving to another restaurant.
Ribs Tuesday attracted us. We had chicken and rib combo. Portion was small, chicken and ribs were dry and chewy, fries tasted old, iced tea was watered down. A Happy Meal would have been much tastier then this. The restaurant is old and needs to be updated to at least, the 80's. We told the waitress we weren't happy with the meal and she responded with "oh thats too bad, do you need the debit machine?" $45 down the toilet
The place was old but the food was horrible. We had 1/4 chicken lunch, frys, cole slaw. The chicken was cooked two days ago, the frys had been cooked in old oil way too long, the chicken and frys were warm at best but so was the cole slaw. We were offered cole slaw with the meal but we were not told it was an extra charge, only 99 cents but we were not told. My husband had coffee with his meal. He asked twice for a refill, was told it would come right away. He got a refill after our meal was taken away. The only reason I can see for people to go there is they have a large parking lot. Also the special barbeque sauce tasted like tomato soup with a dash of hot sauce, inedible.
After hearing people praise this long established restaurant, we decided to visit. We arrived at about 4:45 p.m. on a Saturday. The decor is dated...as in old...but this is Port Perry, so we understood. So long as food and service is good we can overlook decor. We ordered a chicken wrap, and a chicken and rib combo with fries. Portion of the combo was mediocre for the $18.99. Chicken was dry...cooked for about 45 min too long. The 'famous' dipping sauce?...couldn't eat it. It was like tomato juice and ketchup. Our server was friendly...I had to write something nice. This experience was a huge disappointment and we will not be returning. Port Perry has a few nice quaint places in town that we enjoy. We felt that the ready-to-go BBQ chicken from Metro or Costco were much better than Haugen's. Certainly the limited choices for dining in the area is the only reason Haugen's has survived. I'm sure as the town grows, and people have a better selection, Haugen's shouldn't wonder where their diners went.
I dined here with a friend who grew up in the area. She raved to me about how wonderful the food was, so I was really expecting something special. The chicken was average, and the sauce was disgusting. Sorry for being rude, but to me it tasted like spit up. I could not eat more than one mouthful of it. My friend looked at me like I was an alien when I dared to say that I didn't like it. She actually got a bit angry with me, and gruffy reached across the table to claim the rest. To be fair, my friend has been known to brag about mixing Ragu and Prego together as her special spaghetti sauce recipe, and she also thinks M&M Meats is top-notch, "fine" home dining. If you like flavour, avoid this place like the plague.
I saw this place featured on a food network teaser for a new show. Surprised when I talked to people and they all knew the place! So I took the 45 minute drive and it was well worth it. By far the best ribs i have ever had! And again i like places that serve real home cooked food.
I have had so many people tell me to try this place that we finally went last Saturday. It was packed but we had great fast service anyway. It was fantastic. My wife had the chicken and rib combo which she couldn't finish and loved it. I have had pulled pork all over the US and Haugens has the best I have ever had! Thats saying a lot. Kids meals were complete with drink and dessert as should be and cheap. We will definately be regulars.
Having seen how popular this restaurant always is, we decided to try it out again after not having been for many years. Disappointing flavour. Their specialty (chicken) is certainly not as delicious as many other bbq chicken restaurants. Sorry but we're not fans.
The BBQ sauce for the chicken is just tomato paste. Come on, people! This place could be a real country chicken & ribs delight if they put some work into it. Kind of past its best-by date and needs some sprucing up decor-wise. The food is very ho hum. The coffee and tea were awful.
