Shoofly quilt
Finished quilt size: 215 x 250 cm (7 x 8 1/4 ft)
Block size: 30 cm (12 in) – 42 blocks
Fabric requirements
(all fabric is 110 cm/43 in wide cotton)
- 2.3 m (7 1/2 ft) green fabric
- 4.4 m (14 1/2 ft) white fabric
- 2.3 m (7 1/2 ft) coral fabric
- 5.2 m (17 ft) coordinated fabric for backing
- 2.2 x 2.5m (7 1/4 x 8 1/4 ft) batting
Directions
From the green fabric, cut 168 triangles, 42 large squares and 56 small squares. Cut 168 triangles and 168 large squares from the white fabric. Cut 56 coral rectangles.
Make 42 blocks by piecing the large green and white squares and the triangles together. To make a strip row, alternately join seven of the small green squares and six of the coral rectangles together, starting and ending with a square. Make eight strip rows.
Next, set six blocks and seven rectangles together in a row, placing a rectangle between each block and at the start and end of the row. Make seven rows with the blocks and rectangles in this manner.
Join the strip rows to the block rows, setting a strip row at top and bottom. Cut the backing fabric so that it extends five centimetres (two inches) beyond the top at the sides and ends. Cut the batting to the same size as the quilt top. Then baste the three layers together and quilt.
Finally, trim away the excess backing and bind the quilt with double binding.
