Fertilizer production has traditionally been energy-intensive, especially when producing nitrogen through the Haber-Bosch process. But that’s changing. Many producers are investing in green ammonia, made using renewable electricity and water electrolysis, which can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional methods. Others are turning to carbon capture and storage (CCS) to reduce emissions from existing infrastructure. Water efficiency is also improving. According to data collected over the past decade, nitrogen producers use half as much water per ton of product as they did a decade ago. This is thanks to advanced process technologies and closed-loop water systems. These topics, along with others, will be at the forefront of discussion at the 2025 Fertilizer Sustainability Symposium. Join us at Brunel University of London July 28-29 as we discuss the critical sustainability challenges facing the global fertilizer industry. The case study on Solex Thermal Science's co-operation with Dutch-based co-operative Royal Agrifirm Group has been picked up by Heat Exchanger World! The May/June 2025 issue captures how Agrifirm embarked on an opportunity to create an efficient, safe, reliable and chemical-free method to treat the oilseed cake or meal that acts as the main protein source for animal feed. The case study details why Agrifirm contacted Solex. Furthermore, it provides details of how, through a combination of plate-based moving bed heat exchanger (MBHE) technology and industrial heat pumps, the partnership was able to consistently ensure a high-quality finished product through a process that reduced overall energy consumption. It's been an exhilarating first few days at AISTech 2025 in Nashville, TN! Solex Thermal Science is among the hundreds of companies that have come together for North America’s largest annual iron and steel technology conference and exposition. The annual event is meant to provide a global perspective on today’s marketplace by featuring technologies from all over the world that help steelmakers to compete more effectively. Earlier today, Solex representative Scott Harris was welcomed on stage to discuss DRI Pellet Heating and Cooling Energy Recovery Using Vertical Tube Heat Exchangers. The presentation covered how vertical tube heat exchangers using new refractory materials can recover thermal energy from EAF plants to pre-heat DRI before the EAF, and thereby reduce primary energy consumption. If you'd like a copy of the presentation, send us a DM! Did you know that phosphate producers are actively pursuing new methods of recycling phosphorus in their production processes, which would enable the sector to become less dependent on mined phosphate rock — while reducing their environmental footprint? The International Fertilizer Association (IFA) notes fertilizer-grade phosphorus can now be recovered by recycling various alternative sources, such as sewage sludge ashes, meat and bone meal ash and struvite. Do topics like this interest you? If so, join the conversation at the 2025 Fertilizer Sustainability Symposium from July 28-29.
