Alfredo Juarez-Garcia’s one-dollar tacos, or 6 for $4 tacos (depending on the day you come), are an absolute treat for those tired of paying for over-priced Mexican food. Alfredo came up to Montreal from Houston Texas in April 2013 and was shocked at how expensive Mexican restaurants were compared to the United States, and Houston in particular. A veteran of the food service industry he was eager to start serving up the classic, tacoria-style street food of his native Mexico City.
“In Mexico City, restaurants are only for the rich,” explains Alfredo. “The poor people eat in markets, at food stalls. These kinds of tacos are simple to make. You don’t need fancy equipment or toppings. If this government let me sell tacos on the street that’s what I’d like to do – I’m not a restaurateur.”
Alfredo started out by a metro station, making and selling tacos on the weekends. He had a canopy and a gas grill and worked there successfully for three and a half months. “I made some money with the street stall,” he says. “People liked my food and a lot of Mexican people came. I talked to my wife about renting a place, but the price is important. I wanted a cheap place where I would sell a lot – like a Dollar Store. I can make 1000 tacos in one day, no problem.”
