“As far back as I can recall, I’ve dreamed of owning my own business, to have a project to call mine in the field of retail. I’ve always loved furniture, antiques, decorating, gifts. When the time came, I knew design and décor would be my calling,” says Benoît Lacas, owner of Griffintown boutique Ludovik, which delights its customers with an eclectic and contemporary array of furniture, décor accessories, housewares and artwork.
“For the longest time, the stars never seemed to line up like I wanted; I either had a cushy job with nice benefits, which made me wary of taking the leap into entrepreneurship, or I couldn’t afford to do it,” Lacas explains. “But one day in 2006, I told myself ‘alright buddy, it’s now or never!’”
“At first, I didn’t have much knowledge of design, so I collaborated with a designer on buying. We would go to tradeshows in Canada and the States and found, ironically, that a lot of local designers were showing their ware. We would go with our instinct mostly, and over the years, I developed my own eye, and besides, I love eclectic, unique things.”
