In 2011, seven women came together with a shared idea: to create an inclusive, family-oriented, radically bilingual, non-judgmental meeting space in Montreal's Centre-South neighborhood.
What better way to bring people together than through art and food? Le Milieu officially opened in 2012 as a social enterprise based on the cooperative model. The women decided on a name which conveyed the idea of creating an "in-between" space that is neither a home nor public property. Le Milieu, which means "The Middle" in English, seemed entirely appropriate.
Le Milieu coop overflows with creativity and second-hand art materials. Workshops are offered most evenings and weekends in addition to free workshops during the day. You can attend workshops on urban agriculture, fashion parties, knitting circles, drawing groups and puppet parades. Take the opportunity to have an organic and fair-trade coffee or tea, all served with vegan food.
