If “poutine” is the question, La Banquise is always the answer. Open since 1968, this super small eatery originally only sold ice cream and “the classic poutines,” says one manager, Sarah Langelier, but its menu has grown exponentially to meet clients’ growing expectations. Now featuring more than 30 variations, La Banquise pumps out poutine to satisfy everyone’s French fry, cheese and gravy cravings.
La Banquise is still family owned, despite booms in popularity among both locals and tourists. The original owner, Pierre Barsalou, saw the family demand in his small shop, and decided to keep the doors open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Since then, Barsalou’s youngest daughter, Annie, took over. Annie continues to drive La Banquise’s French-Canadian traditions forward.
“It grew bigger and bigger because the people of the neighbourhood would come here for the atmosphere. It was really a family place, first and foremost,” says Sarah. La Banquise still caters to families from the local community, but also a younger late-night crowd, and wide-eyed tourists experiencing the Montreal poutine scene for the first time.

This place has awesome fries and poutine. It is always full of people especially after midnight. The decor of the place is nothing crazy as it's one of those 24-hr joint lookalike. Theyre knows to be "the best poutine in Quebec".
Just in case you did not already know it, La Banquise is the most famous poutine restaurant in Montreal. I always bring people visiting the city to this place so they can enjoy one of the 20-30 poutine available. P.S: Good luck getting there around 3:00am, the place is so crowded that it's difficult to order and get food. After a little while, you will take your first bite and you will forget all the pain :)
La Banquise is known for its amazing poutine, and opening for 24 hours as well. Went to a club till 2-3 am and we were so happy that la Banquise was opened to fill up our hungry stomachs
Arguably one of the best places for poutine in Montreal ( fact : it was actually listed a couple of years ago as one of the best cheap eats in the world!) They have a full menu of poutines all different types and sizes...and the fact that they are open 24H is the best ! ( nothing better to satisfy a poutine craving at 4am) Ambiance is quite fun for this type of place :)

For tourists and locals alike, this is the place to go for traditional Quebec foods, like our world famous poutine. You’ll definitely walk out of there with a full belly and you won’t spend much to enjoy it.

In any event, the night belongs to poutine, and for poutine, it's La Banquise. Yes, they serve a few other items here, but it's a bit like going to Décarie Hot Dog and not getting a hot dog ... make sense? Good luck making your choice, however: Classic? Bacon? Elvis (ground beef)? Mexicaine? Reggae? Trois viandes? As we said, good luck!
