Du Design, du Retro et du Kitsch, located on Sainte-Catherine Street, could not be better named. The store really is a joyous cacophony of furniture, lamps and decorative objects from the '40s to the '80s, with a preference for a mid-20th century modern look, characterized by clean lines and an accessible design inspired by natural forms.
Stéphane St-Arnaud, who owns the shop, points to two root causes behind his passion. The first was the yard sales his father would often take him to as a boy. The second was the advent of eBay.
"When eBay arrived on the scene, I wasn't a seller at all, but I decided to put a radio up for sale, and got an astronomical price for it!" says Stéphane. "At first, I was just doing it for fun. I'd find stuff here and there, I'd go to yard sales. It was the heyday of eBay. You could put a rock on it, and you'd make 40 dollars, US!"
