In 1995 were negotiated the terms of a proposed amendment to the Constitution on International Canadian sovereignty which granted more autonomy and control Teamsters Canada on issues affecting Canadian members. For this purpose, an amendment was adopted at the International Congress of 1996 created the position of President of Teamsters Canada. The candidate for this position will now be elected by the Canadian members.
