Sam studied Chinese cuisine and worked as a chef in Chinese restaurants in his native country of Vietnam. Along with his wife and partner Sandra, Sam came to Canada in the late 1970s. The couple worked hard for years and it paid off; in 2001 they opened their own restaurant, Sam’s Kitchen, in downtown Whitby.
The restaurant soon developed a loyal clientele eager to eat Sam’s spicy Sichuan and Cantonese specialties. As Sandra puts it, “We have a little bit of a different take on Chinese food from most other restaurants. We have a lot spicy food that you don’t find everywhere.”

Awful place gave me stale food and disrespected me when I asked for a refund on a full plate of stale food I did not eat.
There is now better authentic Chinese food in the Whitby area and environs. And the family which operates this business is always wonderfully friendly to their customers.
So we ordered in Sams Kitchen yesterday and I wasn't impressed... The delivery time was great and that's it... The food was horrible... I've tried a lot of different Chinese restaurants and this has to be the worst I've ever had to date... Very tasteless... But that's just my opinion... We were very disappointed... ?
The only reason we may not return is because the boy is finished college at DC. We've stopped in twice and it is delicious. General Tso's chicken is excellent, crunchy and tasty. The spiced oil/hot sauce is home made by Sam and delicious. The service is great and Sam is a fabulous host. Perhaps we can stop in when travelling in the area.
We went here on Christmas Day & ordered 2 things. The decor was simple, the people were friendly but best of all the food was still piping hot & so delicious when we got it home and enjoyed it with our movie. We will def go back again! :)
First visit since they've re-opened, and glad we went! New decor is MUCH improved, and food is as good as it should be. BEST Cantonese Chow Mein I've had outside of Chinatown. BEST. I like also that they will adjust the spice level of the dishes on request, as each dish is made fresh.
We were in the area and decided to hit up this place and are very pleased that we did. My niece and all of her college-aged friends say they always go there after the bars and I can really see why! Like all Chinese places, the menus are mostly similar and consistent which is nice, but each place does their own little thing too. The serving sizes are great and the food is always fast and fresh. I think they've got a walk-in special, but I'm not so sure to be honest. No complaints with Sam's, that's for sure! The only problem I had was caused by me, cause I ate an entire darned styrofoam container of the crispy tamarind beef and then had severe heartburn. But really, I mean, the wife said that was like four or more servings and I should've known better. I however, say it was totally worth it.
