Formerly known as the Ontario Crafts Council, Craft Ontario launched its new identity in February 2014. "We were founded as a non-profit group back in 1976," says executive director, Emma Quin. "Changing times certainly drove the need to critically assess our place in the overall context of how perceptions and practices of craft are evolving."
Part of that critical assessment was not only a new name, but also the launching of a new website to give the crafts featured in the gallery a more robust online presence. "We have a retail outlet and online shopping that showcase approximately 300 to 400 craftspeople at all times," says Emma. "Our main focus is on promoting crafts across multiple mediums and networking with craftspeople and curators." Craft Ontario also publishes Canada's only craft and design magazine, Studio.
