Very long wait time, under staffed, way over priced. Food is average not worth the time and money.
We had chef's special sushi and sashimi plate, caterpillar roll, bibimbab. Everything was fresh, nicely presented. I had thick and fresh cuts of tuna, yellow tail, unagi, and even ikura sushi in the sushi plate, it was a nice selection of nigiri sushi. Caterpillar roll was bigger than I thought, and it came with miso soup and salad. One of my Japanese friend ordered bibimbab, and I didn't know it is served in the heated stone pot, it was very unique. The pot was still hot until we finish our meal! We spend around $60 for 3, considering it was dinner time, I guess it's reasonable price. Also we were seated in Tatami room which was very nice. It seems great for small party around 6 people.
We had eaten at Masamune before and it was acceptable. It is not acceptable now. The new chef is using inferior technic and poor selection of foodstuff. We were disappointed. In summary Masamune is now above average expensive and below average food.
They have really fresh sashimi and sushi. I really like this place because of fresh fish. Every day they have new arrived fish!! They changed management almost year ago, but I still visit this place. After new management, they have new menu which including special rolls and combo meals! This place still best in Mississauga.
I recently went back to Masamune after having been away from Mississauga for the last year. I guess within the year or so I've been away they have changed hands. The exceptional sushi chef who had been behind the counter for years is no longer there! In fact all of the familiar faces are no longer here. I've always had a good meal here in the past, especially the sushi which was the best in Mississauga. I wonder where they are now.... I believe it is the change in chefs that has led to the downgrade of quality at this once stellar establishment..
I am a regular diner of Japanese restaurants from Toronto to Hamilton, and this was not a Sushi experience that lived up to the hype. The Good: - Food looked good, and tasted good for the most part The Bad: - EXPENSIVE. Way too expensive. The average roll cost $15 and the sashimi was significantly cut small for a platter that cost $35. - Location, difficult to spot from the road if you've never been there before - Poor service. Unattentive staff; would often leave without refilling tea I don't care how hungry I am, there are far better (not to mention, CHEAPER) Japanese restaurants on Bloor St. in Toronto, and I would highly recommend trying those out before making a second or even first time visit to Masamune. In fact, I'd be willing to bet two spider rolls and a large sashimi platter that there's at least five better Japanese restaurants to be had in Mississauga.
I was invited here by a Chinese friend. He wanted me to try this whole sushi phenomenon from his country. Well to my surprise most of the patrons were Canadians. I guess we do eat sushi after all. The food is disgusting. It is RAW and uncooked. Definitely scary if you know bacteria. I hope the kitchen is clean!! Also they bring you raw vegetable soup. People, the fish is raw. Anyway if you must go then be aware that you can ask for steaky beef which is cooked. (I found out later)
Very nice place, very reasonable prices for the quality of food. It's not all you can eat bunch of rice and a little fish place. I will return.
I'm from Alberta on business staying at the closeby Stage West Hotel. I discovered Masamune walking down Dixie St in search of a Starbucks. I didn't find a starbucks but wound up finding delicious sushi. I ordered the Chef's Sushi, which came with a salad and miso soup to start. The sushi was delicious, it included staples such as tuna, salmon, red snapper and premium peices such as eel unagi, yellowtail, founder. It also came with a tempura maki which was also very nice. The service was very good, my waitress was very nice and ensured my tea cup was never empty! Another thing I really appreciated was that the first time I went in, I asked for no salad dressing on the salad, and the second I went in, my waitress gave me a salad sans dressing even when I forgot to mention it when I ordered. Very impressive attention to detail. The chef also remembered to put double wasabi on all my sushi. Love Love Love this place, Wish I could take it back home with me!
After reading some of the reviews, I thought I would write my own to post. Firstly, I cannot praise this establishment enough for the freshness of their ingredients (fish!) The sushi was perfection, the rice was seasoned well and the fish extremely fresh. The sushi was presented beautiully on a nice platter. Some of the previous reviewers wrote that the restaurant is on the pricey side, but I beg to differ.. At most of the other estbalishments the prices are kept lower because they are using less quality ingredients as well as slicing their fish quite thinly. I could tell that even the spicy tuna maki had large amounts of high quality tuna! When it comes to something like raw fish, I'd glady pay a few extra dollars to ensure quality. As the old adage goes you really do get what you pay for. Our waitress was quick, efficient, and very friendly. One of the people in our party was a sushi novice and the nice waitress patienly answered all his questions. I would return as soon as possible! Fantastic!
Not too much to say, standard sushi fare with Korean side dishes. Do not sit in the first booth if you want a bit of privacy. Waitress kept coming in to adjust the temperature as the thermostat was located there! It is a bit on the pricey side in comparison to other sushi places.
Loved the environment. I booked one of the private rooms, so things were pretty nice in there. Servers were very hospitable and kind. Food was top notch, some of the best beef teriyaki I've ever had. Prices are a bit steep for me, but the price does reflect the quality of the meal.
I always try the tempura udon whenever I go to any Japanese restaurant.....this is the absolute best outside of Japan. I haven't tried anything else only because the tempura udon is so good and I keep going back for that !
Simply the BEST sushi place that I have ever been at! - in the GTA. I have been going there on and off for at least 15 years, and have never had a bad experience. Often have client meetings there, and no one has ever been disappointed! Prices are great value. I am out in restaurants at least 3-5 times per week...
Service and food, I love both. I'll try lunch too.
Good Service, Good Ambience, EXCELLENT SUSHI, Comfy Tatami Rooms = Terrific Experience! The Sushi was very good, fresh and delicious. The sushi rice was done just right with the perfect amount of flavouring. Nice Job! 11.95 For the Sushi Lunch is a real bargain considering the quality of fish these guys serve.
After reading the reviews for Masamune written below, I decided to put in my two cents as well. I didn't realize that this place had been opened since 1995! I have only just discovered this gem a few weeks back, but I can see why they have a loyal fanbase coming back year after year. Firstly, anyone who really enjoys good sushi knows that the freshness and quality of ingredients is the most important thing. The three times I have eaten here, the sushi has always been very fresh. Being a very industrial area filled with many office buildings nearby, the place is busy at lunch but I was able to get a table for 4 quickly. I had no idea how large the place is!! Our table went in for a christmas lunch. We ordered pot of sake and a sushi boat Large for out table. We also had chicken and salmon teriyaki as well. The meal was very good and we were served orange slices afterwards. I can't think of going somewhere else for this standard of sushi! Very nice
Super fresh ingredients always make for the best sushi and sashimi at Masamune. We have been coming to this place for well over 10 years! We love it Here! It is the perfect place to bring guest or for family birthday parties in one of the tatami rooms which accomodate up to 8 people. We always get a sushi and sashimi mixed combination boat to start our meal and have never been dissapointed! Simple the best!
I had been to Masamune several times before but had never noticed that they have a rather extensive korean menu as well. We ordered a bunch of things from the korean menu which were generous in portion! We had the Squid Bokkum ( Calamari squid stir fried with veggies in a spicy sauce) Seafood Pajun (It was like a giant omelet with various seafoods and green onions!)tasty.. We also had a hwe dup bap which was like a big salad with different raw fishes cut in. It was mixed with a spicy sour hot sauce! Fantastic!
We were seated around the kitchen table. Very good service and delicious food. Entertaining atmosphere. The food was fresh and very well prepared in front of your eyes.
