Okay for a fix
Ukrainian restaurants are scarce, so I believe every one should be cherished. I had a craving for Ukrainian food and after driving by Julia's a couple of times while in Winnipeg, I decided to indulge. The atmoshphere is a bit tired but this is a casual, breakfast and lunch establishment. What I ordered is described below. The cauliflower and rice soup was really good and homemade. The rest of the meal was just alright. The cabbage rolls were mostly rice, kind of bland and rather small. The perogies, which I'm sure were made in-house, didn't live up to the "Best Perogies in Town" claim painted on the window. They weren't all that different from store-bought. Caramelized onions smothered on top would have been nice. The meatballs were tasty as was the coleslaw. However, the portion of the latter was ridiculously small. This establishment has likely been there for many years and they apparently cater too. It just seems like somewhere along the line they settled on just being okay. With some passion restored, perhaps they may have the "Best Perogies in Town" again someday. Till then, it is good enough to semi-satisfy your craving for some of the Ukrainian/Polish staples.
