What’s old is new again in the Vancouver neighbourhood of Brewery Creek. A century ago, the area got its name from the accumulation of breweries that lined the now-covered creek’s banks, but until recently, all that remained from that era was a heritage marker.
Today, however, new breweries are re-establishing the area as a beer-making hub, and as if to cap it all off, the Red Truck Beer Company has built a 40,000-square-foot facility where the creek used to empty into the mudflats of False Creek.
The new facility is a sleek, modern structure with contrasting vintage-inspired details referencing 1950s nostalgia. Outside, large-scale brewing equipment dominates — grain silos, an elevated pipe bridge and grain conveyor, and a lofty water tower looming over the False Creek flats. The building was necessitated by the inability of Red Truck’s previous location in North Vancouver to accommodate the company’s growth plans. “We’d been at max capacity for three years,” explains General Manager Jim Dodds, "So it was decision time.”
