Isola Bella,Vancouver’s oldest baby and children’s clothing and shoe store, first opened its doors at a storefront on South Granville in 1983. The boutique moved to Arbutus at 41st in 1987 and relocated to its current digs on Yew Street in 1992. Owner Julia Molnar remembers these dates according to how they relate to milestones in the lives of her six children, as many parents do.
“I’ve been around for so long that I’m now dressing the grandchildren of women who used to shop here for their children," Julia says. "And some of the clothing bought here during our first years of business has now been passed on to those grandchildren. That’s a lot of fun.”
The unique name, Isola Bella, translates to “beautiful island” and was inspired by Julia’s own visit to the Italian island of the same name
Are you more likely to catch your little one flipping through the pages of Vogue than their history textbook? Street-style bloggers in training will swoon at Isola Bella’s mixture of high-end kids’ apparel from Chloe, Stella McCartney, Paul Smith, Jean Paul Gaultier and many more big-name fashion labels. The Kerrisdale boutique’s style-forward clothes and shoes are focused more on fashion than function, although cool camo jackets from Scotch & Soda are a practical pick for Vancouver’s rainy fall season. The designer wares here come with a high price tag so be prepared to splurge.
