"I realized that I should be teaching martial arts when a young woman was abducted, assaulted and her body dumped not far from my home," says Shane Rahn, owner and expert instructor at Rahn's Black Belt Academy. "If she'd just had a little self-defence training, that atrocious act might have been prevented."
That was in 1997, and by 1998, Shane had opened a club in nearby Aldergrove to teach martial arts. "I realized that I had a passion for kids and a passion for teaching women how to be strong," he says.
Taking the big step of leaving the comfort of a family business selling clothing, in 2002 Shane opened Rahn's Black Belt Academy. "The transition was relatively easy," he recalls. "Growth came slowly and gradually. The best thing was when we began to develop leaders in our school."
