In all her travels around the globe, Lynn Hillaby found herself in cooking stores noting down and collecting must-have kitchenwares: Moroccan tajines, French egg crackers, British bean frenchers. She’d end up paying overweight luggage fees for hauling copper pots and arriving home with tajines that turned to rubble. “You learn a lot about a culture from what they’re cooking and their implements,” she says. “You go to Morocco and you see some things that are so far from our culture, and yet we’re making very similar foods.”
Lynn’s transition from collector to importer, opening up Hillaby’s Tools for Cooks in 2011, was a natural one. She already had years of stock lists and a passion for cooking and inspiring others to cook. “Cooking is the ultimate gift,” she says. “ ‘I like this and I think you will too.’”
Measuring and weighing your ingredients during food prep is one of the most important steps for eating healthy. Hillaby’s carries high quality Escali scales, tested to military standards for quality assurance. In addition to electronics and gadgets, Hillaby’s also stocks bakeware, cookware and knives from multiple quality brands, such as Cuisipro, Miyabi, Staub, Brown Betty and Dualit.
Located in the Enjoy Centre in St. Albert, Hillaby’s name says it all. They carry kitchen supplies from dozens of brands, including La Rochere, Vera Wang, Trudeau and Duck Soup. It’s all about quality supplies here, so it’s a good place to register for kitchen items when you’re getting married or moving into a new home.
This store sells some awesome mixers, including the Breville handy stand mixer, which is a fraction of the price of other fancy standing mixers but still works nicely. Its compact design means it doesn’t take up your whole countertop – it’s like a hand mixer and standing mixer had a cute little baby. You can detach the mixer and move it around but you still have the stability of a standing mixer, if you want it. It has 12 speeds and two independent motors – one for moving the beaters, one for rotating the beaters.
