The fun and festive atmosphere of Julio’s Barrio makes it one of the most popularwatering holes in Calgary’s Kensington area. The two-storey Mexican restaurant andbar serves generously portioned Mexican meals and features a casual cantina interior ornamented with piñatas, sombreros and colourful Mexican wall paintings. General manager Dani Trifaux says the restaurant’s mandate is simple. “I want mycustomers to come in, have a great experience, and leave happy,” she says.

Why offer vegetarian or vegan options if you cant provide dishes without meat? Vegan fajhitas number 1 had small bits of chicken in with the veg (it also came with cheese and sour cream, but on the side). I sent it back, and waited.... Our waitress quickly lost interest in our party, and - after an hour - brought my replacement meal, but as a free takeaway (everyone else at our table had finished, and the restaurant wanted the table back). When I got it home, this one had bits of pork in it.Yuk.
This resturant was a last resort choice. When I first entered the resturant I was right away put off about the host staff. They stood there chatting and laughing with each other for a few min while staring blankly at me. Then when we were seated the table was not clean and had to be wiped down. We had a reservation for a larger group so I assumed that this would have been taken care of ahead of time. Our waitress was pleasent and helpful. I did not like however when you have a large group that the wait staff dosnt come around the table while taking orders instead makes you shout them across your party. Now the food...... I think it was food? Most Mexican or southern inspired resturants make there own chips and salsa......not here its low end. Over priced for what you get. And as for taste well they seem to try to hide the skill leve with spice and onion. I honeslty think they need to take a vist to a real mexican resturant to see how it should taste. The only thing holding this resturant up is the drinks. Hats off to the bartenders. Youll need a few bulldogs to get through this meal.
I love Mexican food. Juilio's has a GREAT atmosphere as well as great food. The bulldog's and margaritas are awesome. Great place for a group or a date. Love the patio when its hot.
Hard to find good Mexican food in Calgary. This is a great place for food and bringing the gang.

Enjoying a cool drink on a hot day is often prize enough, but from the Spanish-style second-level patio at Julio’s Barrio, the experience is elevated to a sublime level thanks to the gorgeous view of the downtown core and the Bow River. With the nearby trains, trails and bike paths, becoming the designated driver is a non-issue, which means you can hunker down and beat the heat with one of Julio’s Barrio’s famous slushy bulldogs.

Take in the vista while you chow down on some tacos, fajitas or burritos and drink one of Julio’s many varieties of bulldog – a beer upended in boozy slush, it’s perfect for summer sipping.
