Come taste a delectable dish at Dickens Pub. Come relax at the bar with a drink. They are open nightly all week and are conveniently reachable by public transit but also by bicycle. Come visit them in an area acknowledged as lively.
This downtown pub is well known as a thriving alternative music venue. Following a trend that has been growing across Canada and the U.S., Dickens Pub also offers Gamer Sundays, allowing board game enthusiasts to play Dungeons & Dragons as well as other games while knocking back a pint or two through the evening.
This unassuming basement-level bar in downtown’s west end is well known for its involvement in Calgary’s punk and hardcore music scenes. But Dickens has also played host to many rappers and hip-hop artists. The bar has seen Canadian acts like Vancouver’s Swollen Members as well as British Columbia Stompdown artists Snak The Ripper, Evil Ebenezer and Merkules. Dickens also presents old-school American rap legends such as The Onyx, Redman, M.O.P. and others.
If I want to go out for a night of fun and tomfoolery, it’s Dickens. The busy, downtown club presents funk, punk, big-band, metal and indie-rock gigs as well as DJ dance nights, including ’80s-themed Hang the DJ. Featuring a stage and dance floor, Dickens patrons can hang out in its cozy lounge area and its library room. Distractions include pool, darts and VLTs. It’s unpretentious, and people are there to do their own thing, whatever that is. I recommend ordering the nachos.
